5-Hydroxytryptophan is a metabolite of tryptophan, one of the amino acids the body uses to make the brain chemical serotonin, a powerful neuronutrient that helps control mood as well as sleep disturbances. Derived from the plant Griffonia Simplicifolia, 5-Hydroxytryptophan has been shown to be an effective mood elevator, due to its enhancing effect on brain serotonin levels. Serotonin is a precursor to melatonin, a sleep promoting hormone that is involved in the Circadian (sleep-wake) cycle. Reseach also suggests benefits of 5-HTP in the treatment of behavioural disorders.

As both a vasodilator and a powerful neurotransmitter, 5-HTP may help lessen the severity and regularity of migraine attacks and should be used as a preventative measure.
